Become a REX Chair

REX Roundtables for EXecutives™ is the premier process for executives who want to improve the performance of their organization and the quality of their life.

REX chairs are part of a growing community of unique coach/consultants/teachers who share a commitment to forming and chairing roundtables for executives. Most REX roundtable members are executives, usually the owner or CEO. Some roundtables consist of senior executives, reporting to the owner or CEO. We serve a mix of businesses and nonprofit institutions. The REX community commits to supporting one another professionally personally.

REX provides training, mentoring and on going support for experienced executives and active consultants who wish to become roundtable chairs. We help chairs select appropriate industries for your roundtables in the corporate, government and nonprofit worlds; guide you in marketing and recruiting to build your roundtable(s); train and mentor you in the unique REX chairing process; and we support chairs with extensive online resources.

REX is establishing 1,000 executive roundtables in the next ten years. We need your help!

The flagship REX roundtable consists of fourteen CEOs from the same industry. Seven additional roundtable formats have evolved for special situations. All these programs build on the fundamental principle of intense, honest, confidential peer interaction, professionally chaired.

What REX Does for Chairs

We help former CEOs, established consultants, and professionals in the social sciences decide if they have the skills, style and temperament to be a successful REX chair. If so, we will mentor you, help you market and recruit for your roundtable(s), and provide extensive resources to deliver high value process and content to your roundtables. Content includes leadership, management, organizational design and plain business sense. In addition REX provides resources for personal and professional growth for your roundtable members. Lastly, we mentor chairs and provide methods, materials and skill development on managing the group process and developing the roundtable into a very high performing and caring community. REX provides an Administrative Manual, a Roundtable Chairs Manual, and thousands of pages of resources for use with members, master copies of the REX logo, stationery, business cards and brochures for your use. Chairs also appear on the REX website.
The Chair's Commitment
We expect chairs to join the REX community of chairs. This is centered on participating in the Roundtable for Chairs REX operates—three two-day meetings annually as long as you are an active chair. These meetings are the core of the ongoing mentoring in roundtable marketing and chairing. In addition we expect all chairs to author or coauthor with other chairs several articles and/or book reviews a year.
What REX Provides To Chairs
  1. A Business Annuity

Roundtables have extraordinary dynamics as a business. The basic roundtable has 14 members paying $2,000 to $4,000 a year for a total of approximately $25,000 to $50,000 a year. Of course, your expenses are paid for from this income. It is possible for a chair to successfully operate up to 10 roundtables at a time.

The unique qualities of a REX Roundtable as a customer.

    1. Loyalty is high. In roundtables of business owners the drop out rate is 5% or less a year, and much of this is due to selling the business or retiring. Thus customers tend to last for a decade or more.

    2. Since REX Roundtables are industry focused the members know who else in the industry to recruit to keep your roundtable full. Since members know the candidates, they can do much of the recruiting.

    3. A successful REX Industry Roundtable opens the door to expanding within the industry. Will Phillips started his first Health Club Roundtable in 1990. REX now chairs eight Roundtables in that industry and is still growing.

    4. Spin off consulting income to the chair from roundtable members.

  2. Marketing Support

    • Internet Presence

Your photo, bio and contact information can be listed on the REX website.

    • Logo And Name

As a REX chair you can use the REX logo and name, REX Roundtables for EXecutives. You must have your own business name and use it on your letterhead, business cards, emails and other publications, and list your self as a member of the REX Chair Network.

    • Marketing And Sales Strategy And Follow Through

REX provide chairs with information on the effectiveness of marketing strategies for launching your first roundtable, expanding a current roundtable, and growing roundtables within an industry. The REX Chairs Roundtable is the locus of support in helping you design effective marketing strategies and sales methods.

  3. Leveraged Resources for Your Clients

The REX website has important tools for data collection and management.

    • Management Briefings

Chairs are provided with over one hundred articles covering most aspects of organizational life and health, from leadership and strategy formulation to hiring and budgeting. These are continually expanded and tailored to industries by the REX chairs. Chairs are encouraged to write new articles and tailor current ones to fit their industry.

    • Book Reviews

Dozens of book reviews, often with specific ways of applying the material to members businesses. REX separates the wheat from the chaff and reviews the best usually years before they appear in industry magazines. Chairs are encouraged to write book reviews and tailor current ones to their industry.

    • Rex EZine

A REX EZine, called Strategic Success, is produced several times a year with new resources for members and nonmembers. This tool is used as another avenue to reach members with new book reviews, management briefings and resources. It is also useful as a way of introducing potential roundtable members to REX.

    • Roundtable Notes And Archives

Every Roundtable session produces varying amount of notes on the session such as:

      • Topics covered
      • New resources presented
      • Books recommended
      • Presentations made
      • Assignments and action plans which nurture accountability
      • Future agenda items

These can be archived on the roundtable's private room for future reference.

    • Key Performance Indicators

All REX Roundtable chairs are encourage to help their members develop a set of key performance indicators for their industry. The REX website has several models to build on. These allow members to enter data before the roundtable session; ratios are automatically calculated; a group spread sheet is prepared; data is graphed and ranked. All this is made available to the members to review before the roundtable. This becomes a powerful, reality based foundation for valuable dialogue between members.

The more roundtables REX has, the more years in an industry, the deeper our database of best practices. REX databases have some advantages over industry-wide surveys. REX members tend to be the better performing in their industry. The data from individual businesses is available, so intriguing performance by one member organization can be explored in detail with that organization's leader.

    • Discussions

Each roundtable has a private discussion area where issues, problems, opportunities, and resource inquiries can take place between the roundtable members between sessions. The discussion area is set up to be more efficient and effective that using e-mail. The discussions are archived and searchable for future use. This is an extraordinary resource to help the chair develop new agenda topics, as well as the foundation for industry articles by the chair.

    • Surveys

We anticipate offering regular survey tools to roundtable members such as regular employee morale surveys, customer satisfaction surveys, life cycle surveys, etc. This will allow members of the roundtable to compare results and explore how and why to improve their performance. This area is not fully developed.

    • Dating Service

Each REX roundtable commits to absolute confidentiality in all its interactions. The REX Dating Service will allow a member of one Roundtable to seek permission from members in other REX Roundtables to compare survey and key performance data. We anticipate the inquiring member to specify a profile of the organization they would like to date. The Dating Service would then report who matches the profile allowing the inquiring member to now ask for a 'date' to share information.

    • Cross Roundtable Resources

Numerous studies on innovation report that significant improvements in an industry often originate outside the industry where fresh thinking is more likely. As REX operates in multiple industries with many industry leaders, REX chairs serve as break-through brokers of new ideas and applications from one industry to another. This exchange happens spontaneously between chairs and is nurtured at the Roundtables for REX Chairs.

  4. Efficiency Tools

The REX website sets up a private room for each of your roundtables. This includes administrative features to help coordinate your roundtable and reduce the time you must invest in administrative activities. These include:

    • Roundtable roster with members names and contact information, updated by the member.

    • Member profile that captures data on each member in up to ten categories you specify.

      Members enter their own data.

    • The agenda for the next roundtable session.

    • Logistics for the next roundtable.

    • Schedule roundtable session dates and their site.

  5. Professional and Personal Development

    • Peers

You become a part of network of peers who will help you and challenge you to grow professional and personally.

    • Business and Industry Learning

Being a member of the REX chair community connects you to learning with experienced leaders, consultants and across industries.

    • Support

Most of us work hard to look and act professionally, to be seen as competent. We also enjoy the guru like status that many chairs achieve among their roundtables members. It is useful to remember what Wavy Gravy (master of ceremonies at Woodstock) said, 'We are all BOZOS ON THE BUS.' No matter how we want to look or think that others look We Are All Bozos on the Bus. Our Bozoness shines when we make a bad decision, feel insecure, loose a major contract, and experience a loss. The REX community of roundtable chairs is an extraordinary caring resource to help you ride through a rough period in life or work.

What Chairs Say About REX
Learning with leaders in the industry I'm passionate about—museums-through my role as a REX chair, has made me the expert I always aspired to be. I've been privileged to give away that expertise in the roundtable and in doing so, I've seen it return tenfold.
